Jolie’s dad learned of her mastectomy from newspaper

TORONTO — Angelina Jolie’s famous father didn’t find out she had a preventive double mastectomy until he read it in The New York Times.

Actor Jon Voight told the New York Daily News he found out that Jolie underwent the procedure only upon reading her op-ed on Tuesday.

“I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she’s handled this,” Voight said. “My love and admiration for my daughter can’t be explained in words.”

Voight said Jolie said nothing when he saw her last weekend. “I didn’t know. It wasn’t obvious at all.”

The veteran actor, who had a very public rift with his daughter more than a decade ago, said he respects Jolie’s decision not to share the experience with him.

“I completely understand,” he told the Daily News. “I want the focus to be on the inspiration.”
