Oak Bay – Gordon Head results: Andrew Weaver wins seat for Green Party

Andrew Weaver has won a seat for the Green Party, becoming the first Green MLA in B.C. history.

Weaver defeated Liberal cabinet minister Ida Chong as well as the NDP’s Jessica Van der Veen. As of 9:56 p.m. on election night, Weaver had 40.7 per cent of the vote, compared to Van der Veen’s 29.6 per cent. Chong came in third with 27.8 per cent.

Oak Bay – Gordon Head was widely seen as one of the best chances for the Green Party to snag a seat. They fielded a strong candidate in Andrew Weaver, who was part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Ida Chong was first elected to this Victoria-area riding in 1996. Most recently, she was the Minister of Community, Sports and Cultural Development.
