Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a man is dead and an officer has been injured after a police investigation in Scarborough Tuesday evening.
An SIU spokesperson told reporters that Toronto police officers were attempting to stop a vehicle near Midland Avenue and Midwest Road at around 8 p.m. when the vehicle struck and injured a police officer.
The spokesperson said another police officer then fired their gun at the vehicle multiple times and a 21-year-old man was shot.
He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officers attempting to stop the vehicle were a part of the guns and gangs unit and were investigating the driver, the SIU said.
The SIU said there were three other people in the car with the driver.
On Twitter, police said the injured officer was brought to hospital and had non-life-threatening injuries, but police did not comment further on the incident given the ongoing investigation.
The SIU said on Wednesday that the officer had since been released from hospital.

Earlier in the evening Tuesday, police initially said a man and an officer were transported to hospital after a shooting, but the nature of their injuries were unclear until the SIU updated reporters.
Images from the scene showed a number of civilian vehicles in a cordoned off area, and bullet holes in the windshield of a white Mercedes.
A witness at the scene told Global News that she saw paramedics performing CPR on a man before placing him in an ambulance.
The SIU is a police watchdog agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
