Teenager dies during Goodlife Toronto Marathon

TORONTO – Police say there were multiple attempts to revive the 18-year-old woman who died after collapsing during the Goodlife Toronto Marathon on Sunday.

She has been identified as Emma van Nostrand of Cape Breton, N.S.

An article published on The Cape Breton Post website Sunday night said van Nostrand travelled to Toronto with her parents to run the marathon.

All three were described as avid runners.

The exact cause of van Nostrand’s death is still unknown.

Earlier Sunday evening, police confirmed that the young woman, now identified as van Nostrand, collapsed on Lake Shore Blvd. due to a medical condition.

She was unconscious and without vital signs when they arrived on scene.

Despite a full resuscitation effort, paramedics were unable to revive her.

A crisis intervention team was at van Nostrand’s Cape Breton high school on Monday to help mourning students cope with their classmate’s death.

A male runner also collapsed during the race but paramedics were able to resuscitate him. He was later taken to hospital where he was reported in stable condition.
