MOOSE JAW – Residents in Moose Jaw are busying pumping out their basements after floodwaters hit this weekend.

Mary Hembroff and her sons had five wet vacuums going in the basement of their family home.

“My boys have been working around the clock the last two nights because we have seepage coming in,” she said.

So far, they’ve been able to cope with the water, which has turned half their lawn into a lake.

Nearby, at the intersection of 1st Avenue South East and Wellesley Street, a backed up storm drain resulted in a foot of water on the road.

Meanwhile, a row of houses down the street were high and dry. Sandbags that were delivered earlier sat on driveways, unused. With water levels slated to come down over the next few days, they might never be. Still, it’s an example of just how prepared residents were this year even before the waters began to rise.

“There are plans in place, people are sandbagging ahead of time, we have prepositioned goods throughout the province ready to go,” said Dave Kyba from the Canadian Red Cross.
