340 ‘prepare to evacuate’ letters sent out by Regina

REGINA – A tenth Saskatchewan community has declared a flood emergency and the city of Regina has told residents to be prepared for rising water levels.

The Muscowpetung First Nation in Fort Qu’Appelle, east of Regina, is the latest addition to the emergency list.

Communities across southern Saskatchewan are bracing for water as snow cover melts with warmer temperatures this weekend.

Regina city officials have sent letters to 340 homes advising residents to be ready for an evacuation by packing a kit with medication and cash and by moving valuables to higher floors.

But the city also says the potential for Wascana Creek to flood homes is extremely small.

The city has put sandbags and other water barriers along some sections of the creek, which runs through the capital.
