Vancouver woman wanted in connection to Pidgin protests

Protesters demonstrate outside Pidgin restaurant in Vancouver's downtown eastside.

Vancouver police are searching for a woman wanted in connection to protests outside a restaurant in Gastown that has been targeted by anarchists since opening early this year.

According to police, 25-year-old Robyn Claire Pickell, of Vancouver, attempted to chain and lock the front doors of Pidgin restaurant in the early morning hours of March 15 while employees were working.

Police said charges of mischief have been approved by Crown Counsel against Pickell.

Since opening its doors in February, Pidgin has been the target of community activists who argue that the restaurant propagates gentrification in the neighbourhood.

Demonstrators say gentrification encroaches on the only remaining Vancouver community where low-income people feel accepted.

Restaurant owners were forced to frost their windows after some protesters shone flashlights through the glass and harassed customers.

Police issued a letter to protesters last month warning picketers their actions could lead to criminal charges.

The letter explained the legal definition of criminal mischief and warned that police will take action against any activity that goes beyond peaceful and legal protest.

Anarchists took to the streets of Gastown dressed in black, wearing face masks and carrying torches on Wednesday night to protest gentrification, causing police to ramp up their presence.

Protesters carried signs that said “Rich scum beware,” and “Class war.”

The protest caused several people to call 911. Police ramped up their presence and formed a blockade around Pidgin.
