Cold month gives Saskatoon the April shivers

SASKATOON – With spring outdoor activities postponed for Saskatonians, the weather also gave residents the April shivers.

According to Environment Canada, Saskatoon’s temperatures last month were colder than the average April.

The average temperature was -2.3 degrees Celsius, 6.7 degrees below the norm for April. In 2012, the month was normal with an average of 4.4 degrees Celsius.

April’s daytime highs averaged 2.5 degrees Celsius, around 8 degrees below the month’s average. The previous year, April highs averaged 10.6 degrees Celsius.

Saskatoon’s record daytime high for April occurred in 1952 when the temperature reached 33.3 degrees Celsius.

The average overnight low last month was -7 degrees Celsius. Saskatoon’s average in April is -1.9 degrees Celsius and last year’s was almost spot-on with that.

In April 1893, the city experienced its record overnight low of -28.3 degrees Celsius.

According to official precipitation records, Saskatoon had well below the normal amount of precipitation this past month, whereas April 2012 was slightly above normal.

Saskatoon received about 6.2 mm last month while the normal liquid water equivalent falls around 24 mm. Last year’s April got a total of 27.3 mm.
