Saint John playground to be monitored by parents group

SAINT JOHN — Some Saint John parents have formed a group to monitor kids and adults at a municipal playground in the Lower West Side, which they say is not the best place to take their children.

Rhoda Welshman says kids and parents use coarse language at the Carleton Community Centre and occasionally she spots drug paraphernalia.

Welshman is a member of the group formed to monitor the playground and perhaps later, the streets in the area.

The group, who calls themselves the Red Shirts, are supported by the local Community Centre and Community Police office.

They aim to have 20 or 30 members who can watch over the community park on a daily basis, especially when school is out.

The Red Shirts first shift is May 11 at a community block party next to the playground.
