Winnipeg man behind bars after assaulting, escaping from police

A Winnipeg man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting police in a traffic stop gone wrong.

Police said they were patrolling in Transcona on Tuesday when they stopped a vehicle and discovered that there was a warrant out for the arrest of a man in the car.

The man struggled with officers, said police, and tried to disarm them when they brought out a taser.

He managed to escape, and after a short foot chase – in which the man tried to carjack several vehicles – officers took him into custody.

Leslie Shane Wolf Stapleton, 27, faces charges of resisting a peace officer, escaping lawful custody, disarming a peace officer, two counts of robbery, and two counts of assaulting a peace officer.
