A Winnipeg man is behind bars after a carjacking early Tuesday morning.

Winnipeg police said the victim, a 65-year-old woman, was stopped at a red light near Burrows Avenue and McPhillips Street around midnight, when a man got into the passenger seat, pulled a knife, and told her to drive.

The suspect then asked the victim to drop him off at the corner of Aikins Street and Hartford Avenue – right next to the North District police station.

The suspect approached police and told them he was on meth and wanted to go to the Main Street Project.

The man was detained and taken to Health Sciences Centre, where police learned he was a suspect in the carjacking and arrested him.
