Police search for suspects following deadly mall shooting

Edmonton – A man is dead after a shooting at a north side mall Tuesday night.

The deadly shooting happened in the upper parking lot at Londonderry Mall at around 9:15 p.m. in front of several witnesses.

According to police, when officers arrived, they found people providing CPR to a man in his mid-20s who had suffered gunshot wounds. Paramedics took the victim to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We’re searching for more than one suspect. The victim himself was known to police, and we don’t think that this was a random act at all,” explains EPS Acting Inspector Erik Johnson.

The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has taken over the investigation.  Investigators are interviewing several witnesses and looking at video from the scene. Based on early evidence, police say it’s fortunate no one else was hurt.

“Obviously, very concerning to the police. There were multiple vehicles that suffered from gunshots. Fortunately, fate smiled on us tonight and nobody else was injured,” says Acting Inspector Johnson.

Two women who live near the mall say they heard numerous gunshots.

“You know how firecrackers, you know, how they sound like one after the other, it was like continuously,” explains Alyssa Hoffmann.

“They were coming one after another. It was scary,” says Nicole Auger.

Investigators are still working to get descriptions of the suspects.

“We’re getting conflicting reports. Obviously, when people hear gunshots, a lot of people start running, so we’re still trying to narrow down who our suspects are, and who our innocent bystanders were,” explains Johnson.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service or Crimestoppers.

Police say results of the autopsy will be released Thursday afternoon.
