Delta city council has approved new countermeasures to ensure its new casino doesn’t get wrapped up in money laundering.
Among the recommendations is a request for the provincial and federal governments to review cashless gaming systems, which require an account and verification of the player.
The systems can also track transactions and gambling data at casinos.
The downside — possibly encouraging problem gambling.
The city is also looking for an update from the B.C. government on the progress made since implementing the 48 recommendations in the 2018 German report. A letter to Attorney General David Eby is on the horizon to gain clarification on which recommendations have been implemented and what still needs to be done.
The council report says money laundering remains a big concern for the community.
In November 2018, the BC Lottery Corporation approved the $70-million Gateway Casinos and Entertainment project in Delta. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring, and the casino is slated to open for business in mid-2020.
