Roof collapses on Montreal North auto repair shop due to snow accumulation

Another roof has collapsed due to the weight of accumulated snow — this time in Montreal North.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning on the corner of Forest Street and Drapeau Avenue.

In the last two days, two auto repair shops in the borough have had their roofs cave in due to the heavy weight of the snow.

Police say the building was empty at the time and there were no reported injuries.

The building, they note, could be a complete loss.

This incident is the latest in a string of roof collapses this season.

Last month, several roofs across the province — both residential and commercial — caved in due to the heavy snow.

The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) notes that roofs are usually able to withstand the volatility of Quebec winters, but it is important to remain vigilant when snow accumulation is “exceptional or atypical.”

Signs to watch out for:

  • Cracks on interior walls
  • Inside doors jamming or rubbing against the frame
  • Noticeable creaking noises
  • Warping or buckling of a ceiling

The RBQ says the first step is to evacuate the building and then remove the snow from the roof.

Though it’s possible to do yourself, the organization recommends hiring qualified professionals as it can be dangerous, “as much for the person who is up on the roof as for anyone who circulates around the house.”

Residents should also be aware of nearby electrical wires and installations when clearing snow.
