File / Global News

An early-morning house fire on McPhillips Street was caused by a space heater, according to Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS).

Fire crews showed up at the two-storey house just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, after a report of two people trapped in the building.

When they arrived, both people had been able to get out safely on their own.

Firefighters entered the home and battled the blaze using an offensive attack, quickly putting out the flames.

No one was injured and the residents were able to head back inside after the fire was extinguished.

The WFPS fire investigator said unsafe use of a portable space heater appears to have caused the accidental blaze.

No damage estimates are available.

WFPS is urging Winnipeggers to follow basic safety tips when using a space heater, including keeping the heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, placing it on a solid, flat surface, and plugging the heater directly into the wall outlet.
