‘The mountain has given way’: rockslide north of Enderby

A rockslide happened on B.C.’s Highway 97A North between Mara and Grindrod on Monday morning.

Tracy Jacobsen was driving home when she was warned about the danger ahead by a car flashing its lights at her.

“I approach the hairpin turn, and I see that the mountain has given way,” she said. “I’m surprised I didn’t have a heart attack.”

“It’s completely covering the northbound lane. The boulders are huge,” Jacobsen said, adding that she had to drive in the opposite lane of traffic to get around it.

Jacobsen said she called 911 right away.

She said some of the boulders are bigger than a car.

“I was shocked,” she said. “It reminded me of what happened down in the Summerland area.”
