The southern Alberta town of High River is mourning the loss of a community leader and devoted family man.

Capt. Reid Habing, commander of 187 Foothills Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, was killed in a vehicle collision on Monday, a close friend told Global News on Wednesday. He was 42.

“[Reid] was so interested in helping people,” said David Moretta, a close friend and colleague. “He touched so many lives.”

RCMP said there was a single-vehicle collision on 88 Street E. and 570 Avenue and the driver died at the scene.  The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Born in Pine Falls, Man., Habing was very much a “get things done” kind of guy, Moretta said. He said Habing had been involved with the air cadets since he was a teenager and always made time to work with the youth in the program.

“Reid was much the face of it (the program),” he said. “The cadets were an extension of his family.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Moretta said Habing’s death has been “a real shock for the kids” and resources have been brought in to help the cadets and the community at large to cope. The group got together Tuesday night to help support each other.

“It was important to get together last night to talk and be together,” he said.

Habing is survived by his wife, Natasha, and his children: Austin, Keiran and Jenna.

It’s going to be a tough road ahead for the family, Moretta said, but he said they’re resilient.

“[He was] a truly rare person,” Moretta said. “It was a pleasure to know him.”
