The Midget Football League of Manitoba will remove the word midget from its name, calling it a term “no longer appropriate in this day and age.”
League commissioner Maggie Yestrau told Global News the league has decided to take the steps to rebrand the league after a meeting last week.
She said the league will work over the 2019 season and they will roll out a new name by early 2020 at the latest.

The league is made up of players from 16-18 years old.
This comes a week after Basketball Manitoba announced they would be dropping the midget term from its leagues around the province.

These recent changes were sparked by a meeting between the Little People of Manitoba organization and 16 people from various Manitoba sports organizations, where removing the word midget in sports was discussed.
Little People of Manitoba president Samantha Rayburn-Trubyk said many of the groups were supportive of the idea and she expects more change to come down the road. She calls the term derogatary and one that brings up negative emotions.
