Starting in the 2019 fall semester, University of Saskatchewan (USask) students will be able to register for a new certificate of Indigenous storytelling.
It was officially launched on Feb. 6 during an Indigenous Achievement Week event held at Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre.
The certificate aims to recognize student knowledge and understanding of approaches to Indigenous storytelling from multiple disciplinary and culturally specific perspectives.
“We hope that learning through the lens of Indigenous storytelling will help to provide an understanding of the past, the present and the future,” USask English department head Wendy Roy said in a press release.
“While the certificate is in the study of storytelling, not in how to tell stories, it may also provide some opportunities for participants to explore pathways toward telling their own stories.”
The departments of Indigenous studies, English and drama in the College of Arts and Science came together to develop the certificate. Courses offered by the sponsoring departments include Indigenous playwriting, Indigenous literatures in Canada, and Métis political and poetic writing.
Registration will be open to undergraduate students enrolled in any USask degree program.
The 21-credit certificate will also be available as a stand-alone program.
