Niagara Falls assault victim has died in hospital, police say

Police say a man who was assaulted last week in Niagara Falls has succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

As a result, Niagara Regional Police say charges against a 17-year-old boy have been upgraded to second-degree murder.

Last Tuesday night, police were called to a home in the Huggins and Gainsborough area, where they found the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. Police say the victim was attacked with a weapon.

Police say a teen, known to the victim, had fled the scene prior to their arrival, but was later located and taken into custody.

The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Tony Paonessa.
