WATCH ABOVE: The Lethbridge YMCA is preparing to temporarily scale back its program offerings as it prepares to move across town to its new home this year. Chris Chacon reports – Jan 31, 2019

For those who frequent the Lethbridge YMCA, be prepared to see some changes, as the YMCA gets ready to move to its new Cor Van Raay location.

“We had announced that this facility will be closing, we still do not know when that’s going to happen,” said director of communications Ross Jacobs. “But in order to prepare for the eventual transition, we have to start converting some of our staff into both training and into decommissioning this building.”

After February 28th, the YMCA will place a few programs on hold such as all fitness classes, swimming programming, TGIF and Y kids and evening childminding.

“But the gym will still be open, still drop-in gym, [so] you can come in and still use the fitness facility, as well as our play space,” Jacobs added. “All of our birthday parties will continue.”

With such a large facility in the works, the YMCA is also actively looking to hire 170 new staff to fill the upcoming demand.

“It’s really exciting for us,” Jacobs said. “To not only provide employment across the board, but to be able to provide programming on a scale like that is pretty exciting for us.”

Although there is no opening date set for the new YMCA, progress continues at one of the largest YMCAs in North America.
