A search for a stolen car Tuesday morning led Winnipeg police to a St. James-area business where they found their suspect hiding in a dumpster.
The events unfolded around 4:20 a.m., when a condo on Creek Bend Road was broken into. A vehicle was stolen using a spare key that police said had been left in the console.
A few hours later, around 9:50 a.m., police spotted the stolen vehicle near King Edward Street and Logan Avenue. They tried to stop it, but it drove off at high speed.
The vehicle, which was abandoned, was later found crashed into a snowbank near King Edward Street and St. Matthews Avenue.
With the help of a K9 Unit, police tracked the suspect to a dumpster behind a Berry Street business. He was taken into custody.
Police said they identified the man as a suspect in a break and enter from September 2017 as well, thanks to forensic evidence.
Brent Vernon Arksey, 29, faces charges of dangerous operation of a conveyance, breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of theft under $5,000, mischief, fleeing a peace officer, and driving while suspended.
There were also two outstanding warrants for breaking and entering, mischief, and two counts of failing to comply with probation.
