Nova Scotia distillery wins international award for best gin

A Nova Scotia distillery has one more award to add to its mantlepiece after attending the 2019 World Gin Awards in London, England this past week.

The Steinhart Distillery, based out of Antigonish, N.S., took home the “Best Classic Gin” in Canada.

Steinhart’s win was in the first round of a three-part contest.

The first round saw awards be distributed over 10 categories by their nations of origin. 

Over the coming weeks, all of the first round winners will be waiting to find out if they are named the best in the world in each of the 10 categories.

Those ten winner will then be competing for the top prize of being voted the world’s best gin.

The World Gin Awards competition has 20 international judges choose gins from approximately 80 distilleries from around the world.

Their selections were then blind-tasted and voted on by over a hundred attendees.

Steinhart won in the classic gin category, earned the gold medal for its haskap gin and a silver medal for its wild blueberry gin.

To celebrate the award, Steinhart is set to host events in Antigonish, N.S., and Halifax and launch a social media competition that will see the winner earn an all-expense paid trip to the distillery.
