Police say 18-year-old Nathan Hutt was one of three men who entered a residence in the 300 block of 4th Street NE and was shot during an altercation by the man home at the time, 23-year-old Keegan Muxlow.

Another man suffered stab wounds, while a third man turned himself into police the next day. Dominick Hawkes, 23, and William McLeod, 25, both from Weyburn, are facing charges that include break and enter and committing assault, wearing a disguise during the commission of an offence and possessing a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence.

Muxlow is also facing multiple charges including second-degree murder. Police say the case for or against self defense will likely be left up to the courts.

“At the end of the day, that will be a matter likely not even for the crown prosecutors office to determine, but likely will be a matter in such a serious case that it will need a judge and jury to make that determination once the entire story comes out,” Weyburn Police Service deputy chief, Rod Stafford said.

At this point, police are still trying to determine a motive, although drugs could be a possibility. Police say in the past six to 12 months with the presence of meth, there’s been a surge in violent crime.

“At this point there are a number of theories that have been expressed again by people we’ve talked to, by people in the community, by friends of these people, but we haven’t been able to confirm or be comfortable with any of those as a motivating factor at this point,” Stafford said.

While all four men were known to each other, police say the incident has had a significant impact on the community.

“We believe there are probably people in the community associated to those who are in custody that could assist in establishing a motive for this or otherwise and if anybody does know anything we’re extremely interested in hearing from them,” Stafford said. “We would hope that they would come in and speak to us directly, but they can utilize Crime Stoppers as well.”

All three individuals are in custody and will make their first court appearance on Jan. 8.
