Il Giardino to close its doors

It’s arguably one of Vancouver’s best-known and most adored restaurants.

Il Giardino has been serving up pasta and wine for nearly four decades at the corner of Hornby and Pacific.

The restaurant is closing after 37 years.

The lot has been sold to a developer who plans to build condos at the site.

Over the years, the restaurant has played host to dozens of celebrities while also retaining a loyal group of returning patrons.

Its owner — the famed Umberto Menghi — isn’t retiring.

He runs two restaurants in Whistler along with a cooking school in his native Italy.
