Saskatchewan roads take winter beating in spring

SASKATOON – It may be April, but snowfall across the province has brought Saskatchewan residents back to winter driving conditions.

Starting last night, winter conditions started causing havoc for motorists out on highways and if the forecast holds true, there could be much more where that came from.

Last night, a head-on collision between a truck and a minivan turned fatal on Highway 5 east of Saskatoon. RCMP are still investigation the crash.

“It was a glaze over, again it’s this influx in temperatures it’s getting warm during the day and cold at night. We got this snow that happened and unfortunately we’ve had 1 fatality and a lot of serious calls since,” said Troy Davies, MD Ambulance spokesperson.

Five accidents were reported within 90 minutes last night and the icy dangerous driving conditions continued into the morning.

STARS air ambulance was called out to a crash this morning where two vehicles collided head-on near Harris, Saskatchewan. Seven occupants were taken to hospital in Rosetown and a boy was airlifted to Saskatoon for medical treatment.

“If you’re on the highways you just have to keep it in mind there is a lot of black ice, there’s a lot of slippery slopes you’re going to hit when you’re driving right now, again speed is everything so slowing down and take your time,’ said Davies.

RCMP and emergency services are asking drivers to slow down and drive the same way they would in the middle of winter, despite it being spring.
