A highly controversial permanent water chlorination system could soon be installed in Chilliwack, despite vocal opposition from residents and the city’s acting mayor.

A temporary system has been in place since E. coli was found in the city’s water in February.

Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall says that without the chlorine, the city’s water is at risk of further contamination.

Acting mayor Chuck Stam is fighting the decision, saying it was forced through quickly and does not have the support of the community.

But Stam says the city will still obey the order, which includes covering cost of the $1.5 million system.
