WATCH: Students march on Redford’s Calgary office

CALGARY- Students at Mount Royal University, angry about cuts to education, marched on Premier Redford’s Calgary constituency office Wednesday.

They planned to present a petition asking the province to reinstate the $147 million cut to post-secondary education announced in the March provincial budget.

MRU’s operating budget is taking a $14 million hit. Some students say they’ve been told they can’t register for programs until the end of April, while the university decides where to make the cuts.

“I am hoping physical education will not be cut- that’s what I’m enrolled in,” says student Brogan Baker.

MRU has already suspended its popular engineering transfer program which allowed students to improve their grades before transferring to engineering programs at other universities.

Several MRI faculty members were at the protest to support the students.

“It’s really important to let the public know that the cuts to the operating budget are really having a tangible impact on the way we deliver education, the opportunities for students, and how they will ultimately contribute to our province,” says faculty member Jill Boettger.

The march and rally began at 10 a.m. and was expected to last until noon.
