UPDATE: Ninderjit Singh receives 16 years in jail before eligible for parole

The man who pleaded guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole for 16 years.

Poonam Randhawa was shot by and killed in 1999.

The 18-year-old’s body was found dumped in a Vancouver alley. Last month, 33-year-old Ninderjit Singh pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in her death.

He spent more than 12 years in hiding, before he was caught in California and brought back to Vancouver.

Prosecutors hoped Singh would spend at least 17 years behind bars before he’s eligible to apply for parole, while he was hoping for 10.
