TORONTO – Mayor Rob Ford wants to derail a proposed $1.2 million bike station under City Hall.

“I’m going to try and kill it at Council,” Ford said during an announcement about summer road work Tuesday. “That’s a complete waste of taxpayer’s money.

“It’s absolutely ludicrous.”

The proposed bike hub would be built in the underground parking garage at Nathan Philips Square and would include 380 secured bike parking spots, showers and change rooms.

The city’s government management committee voted in favour of the bike hub on Monday.

The proposal will be up for debate at a council meeting in May.

A number of other cities, mostly in Europe, have similar bike stations.

In Chicago, the McDonald’s Cycle Center in Millennium Park has been well received by civic leaders.

“[It] is a wonderful facility built for bicycle commuters, and another step toward Mayor Daley’s goal to make Chicago the most bicycle-friendly city in the country,” said Thomas G. Byrne, acting commissioner of the city’s Department of Transportation.
