AHS approves budget cuts

CALGARY- Alberta Health Services has approved cuts to its $13.3 billion budget.

AHS was forced to cut $220 million after receiving a lower than expected funding increase in the March provincial budget.

The board says it plans to move away from part-time nursing staff and hire more full-time workers because that will save on the cost of providing benefits.

It also plans to reduce the hours of hospital operating rooms over the summer months, but denies that will increase wait times.

“We know from prior experience that if you expand some of the summer closures, if we find efficiencies in how we manage the operating rooms, we can make sure the number of surgical cases throughout the year are done,” says Chris Mazurkewich, the board’s chief operating officer.

AHS will release more details of the cuts once the provincial budget is approved.
