All westbound lanes of Highway 1 at 176 Street were closed for several hours backing up traffic all the way to 200 Street.

Officials warned against drivers taking unnecessary risks in an effort to escape the gridlock.

One vehicle was spotted turning around on the 192 overpass towards oncoming traffic.

“We’re already on the scene of one fatality trying to figure out what happened, we certainly don’t want to see any other collisions and certainly not any other fatalities,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Elenore Sturko said.
