WINNIPEG – Manitoba is receiving more than $1 million from the federal government to cover damage caused by tornadoes and wind storms nearly six years ago.

The total payment from Ottawa is $1,183,183 and is coming from the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements.

The money will cover damage caused to private and public property in nine municipalities and the Whiteshell Provincial Park on June 23 and 24, 2007.

The municipalities include Pipestone, Sifton, Cameron, Whitewater, Morton, Riverside, Turtle Mountain, Strathcona and Argyle.

Vic Toews, the regional minister for Manitoba, says in a release that Ottawa is committed to working with the provinces and territories on a new program to help lessen the impact of natural disasters.

There were reports of up to 140 sites of damage, including the distruction of one home, and two people were displaced from their home, the province said in July 2007. Winds also damaged numerous structures and knocked down the equivalent of 500,000 cubic metres of timber in the Whiteshell area.
