U of L professor questions funding cuts

One University of Lethbridge professor is speaking out on concerns over post-secondary funding cuts.

Rob Sutherland chairs the Department of Neuroscience and also serves as the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations (CAFA) president.

He believes cuts, including nearly $12-million at the U of L, will reduce the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in our province.

CAFA questions a Letter of Expectation sent to colleges and universities, calling for a uniform education model.

Sutherland says the changes take away independence from institutions, and may lead staff to look at opportunities outside Alberta.

“I’m particularly worried about young colleagues who maybe don’t see Alberta as the kind of place they’ll have the career they aspire to,” said Sutherland. “They may not see Alberta as the place that will attract high quality students that make our job so interesting.”

Sutherland will be a panelist at a special session of the Southern Alberta Council of Public Affairs (SACPA) on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m.

The session is titled, “Are Recent Cuts to Alberta Post-Secondary Education Justifiable?” and will be held at Lethbridge Public Library.
