TORONTO – A chiropractor who received his licence to practice in Canada after serving jail time for fraud in the United States has had that licence revoked after pleading guilty to similar offences in Ontario.
The College of Chiropractors of Ontario says it pulled Edward Hayes’ licence effective Oct. 6 after he admitted to professional misconduct at a disciplinary hearing.
An agreed statement of fact presented at the hearing says Hayes used to practice in Michigan between 1984 and 1994 until he was convicted of mail fraud.
The statement says he was sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined more than US$140,000, then moved to Canada and successfully got a licence to practise in Ontario.
In 2016, an investigation by Aviva Insurance prompted police to charge Hayes and two other people with multiple counts of fraud under $5,000 related to falsified car accident claims.
The agreed statement of fact says Hayes pleaded guilty to one fraud charge in 2017.
