Rising tension in Alberta town prompts rare move from province

CALGARY- Mounting tension has forced the province to take political control of a small village north of Calgary.

Cremona has a population of just under 500 people, but animosity and infighting has led to the sudden resignation of the mayor, deputy mayor and chief administrative officer. That means there is just one councillor left.

The trouble started when council and residents became divided over who should control the fire hall, and changes from angle parking to parallel parking.

“To me, in a village of 457, if we want to attract people and if we want to serve our people, we’re small enough we can do it on a personal and a casual way instead of making it where we have so many rules and laws that we’re overwhelmed by them,” says Karel Beckman, the remaining councillor. “I don’t think that makes an inviting village.”

The province’s appointed administrator will take charge of the town, until a byelection can be held.
