Electrical hazards brought to surface by flooding season

SaskPower advising residents to be prepared for electrical hazards this flooding season. - / Global News

SASKATOON – SaskPower is reminding all residents to keep electrical hazards in mind for a safe and potentially gruelling flood season.

Due to large amounts of precipitation in Saskatchewan, forecasts are indicating that flooding will likely be a problem this spring.

Submerged electronics can electrocute people and incidents have been known to be fatal.

SaskPower says electrocution is the second most common cause of death during floods, right after drowning.

To be safe from electric and gas hazards during flood season it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Disconnect outdoor electrical devices that could run the risk of being submerged and turn off breakers to outdoor plugs.
  • Hire a licensed gas contractor to move gas appliances in potential flood areas.
  • Unplug appliances and turn off breakers in the basement if water beings to entering the property, but never enter an area if electrical receptacles are under water. If water is already an issue contact SaskPower at 306-310-2220.
  • Shut off the electrical and gas supply to all natural gas and propane appliances. If water is present and it is unsafe, call SaskEnergy at 1-888-700-0427.
  • When using electronic tools and equipment near water, use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) to protect against electrical shock.
  • Always stay away from fallen power lines, especially during a flood.

SaskPower cuts off power to any area that experiences flooding to minimize the risk of electrocution. This also decreases water damage to electrical equipment which allows them to restore power as quickly as possible.

Preventing areas from becoming flooded in the first place is also key.

The city of Saskatoon reminds residents that flood prevention on their property is their responsibility and steps can be taken to reduce snowmelt flooding.

Here are some tips to help residents reduce the risk of spring flooding and stop the threat of electrocution before it starts:

  • Remove snow from around building foundations, where most critical flooding occurs.
  • Clear snow and ice from downspouts and extend them at least two metres so water drains away from the foundation.
  • Keep snow in yards because shovelling it on to streets could block drainage.
  • Hire a professional or safely remove excessive snow on roofs and eaves troughs.

For residents who want to pitch in with street drainage, the city says they can clear snow, ice and debris from catch basins when it is safe to do so.

To report flooding in an area, residents can contact the city at 306-975-2491. Reports may not be immediately addressed as crews focus on the priority locations first.
