Ottawa has signed off on some 3.6 million dollars for the major expansion of the Ashcroft inland port by March of 2014, but getting port authorities onside has not been easy.

The mayor of Ashcroft is backing a port, arguing it will relieve pressure on farmland, take truck traffic out of Metro Vancouver and create much needed jobs in the Interior.

“Not everything happens in the Lower Mainland. We’re the heart of the province. We’re the ones that bring everything that the Lower Mainland needs. So give us that opportunity to do that,” says Village of Ashcroft mayor Andy Anderson. “It’s a great thing for the Lower Mainland. They stand to loose 600 acres of prime farmland in Delta. Do they really want to do that? We’re going to need to feed ourselves. This is a great opportunity for us to enhance what Delta and Vancouver do.”
