Toronto Paramedics said emergency crews were called to a plaza at Martin Grove Road and John Garland Boulevard, south of Finch Avenue West, at 11:30 p.m.

A spokesperson told Global News that paramedics rushed the man, who is believed to be in his 30s, to a trauma centre with a police escort in life-threatening condition. He later died in hospital.

Police said a woman assessed by paramedics at the scene is believed to be the victim’s mother and that she arrived after the shooting took place.

Police said they are seeing an alarming rise in the number of drive-by shootings, especially in public areas.

“It seems drive-by shootings are the new trend these days. It’s very disturbing because, in a lot of cases, they’re using vehicle that are either rented or stolen or other means, and leave the area quickly,” Supt. Ron Taverner said.

“We’re stepping up our presence in these areas and just hopeful that people will come forward with any information they have to help us track these people down and bring them before the courts where they should be.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
