A Manitoba non-profit organization is looking to shake up the summer and ensure no pet is left to fend for themselves.

Feed the Furbabies Canada provides funds and food for animals in need.

“We collect donations to support animals in rescue. We also have stray feeding programs across Manitoba. We have networks of volunteers throughout remote communities.

“They go out to feed and provide shelter to the strays until they are able to go to rescue,” said spokesperson Meghan Irwin.

The organization will be raising funds to support their efforts with ‘The Shake at Falcon Lake’ on Aug. 18.

As the name suggests, the event will be held at Falcon Lake (an hour and a half east of Winnipeg) and will include a vehicle show and shine and a benefit concert. Times and ticket information can be found their Facebook page.

Proceeds will also be shared with St. Amant, a resource centre for Manitobans with developmental disabilities and autism.

In addition to fundraising and feeding strays, the group aims to help prevent increases in stray animal populations.

“We also do spaying and neutering for returned pets that don’t have access to the health care. We also have a mobile clinic to take out to communities to conduct spay and neutering.”

Being a proud mother of a rescue dog, Irwin said her pooch, Isabelle, keeps her motivated to help other pets struggling.

“Isabelle is absolutely my daily inspiration. She keeps us going. It’s not always easy working with a rescue. She was found on an island eating garbage. It makes you want to work to make sure everyone is fed.”
