Surrey investigates allegations of racism at local pool

Surrey City Hall. City of Surrey

A Surrey councillor says he’s taking allegations of racism at an indoor pool “very seriously.”

Dozens of people have signed a letter addressed to South Surrey Indoor Pool staff expressing their disappointment over a patron who allegedly made hateful comments to visible minorities.

Council has received a copy of the letter and Counc. Bruce Hayne says he’s waiting for a report back from staff.

“If it occurred as suggested in the letter, then that’s absolutely unacceptable in any one of our facilities and in our city, period.”

Hayne says if the allegations prove true, there are a number of steps the city can take, including calling in the RCMP to investigate further or banning the person involved from city facilities.
