Environment Canada is calling for a sweltering long weekend and the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is warning residents to be prepared.

Friday afternoon, the health unit announced that it will be issuing a heat warning on Sunday that will last until temperatures drop overnight into Tuesday.

While the warning won’t be in effect until Sunday, the national weather agency is forecasting a high of 30 C on Saturday which is just shy of the MLHU’s threshold for issuing a two-day heat warning.

On Sunday and Monday, Environment Canada is calling for highs of 31 C with overnight lows of 20 C, and that’s before you factor in the humidity which could make it feel closer to 40 during the day.

The local health unit is reminding residents to stay hydrated; avoid alcohol, coffee, and cola; avoid spending too much time outside and stay in the shade if you must be outdoors; wear loose, light clothing; avoid heavy meals and using your oven; and avoid intense or moderately intense physical activity.

As well, you should never leave a child or pet in a parked car or even sleeping outside in direct sunlight.

Anyone who feels they are suffering symptoms associated with extreme temperature conditions should immediately seek medical attention.
