Montreal police are searching for a man they say was caught on camera stealing packages from people's homes – Aug 2, 2018

Laval Police are asking for your help to track down someone suspected of stealing packages off front porches.

Officers have shared a video of the alleged parcel thief grabbing a box right from a homeowner’s doorstep on Parc-des-Érables street in the Auteuil area.

After four packages had been taken from the front of that particular resident’s home in the past few months, he had a security camera installed and caught footage of the thief.

Police say the suspect is a white man in his fifties who travels by bicycle. Spokesperson Evelyn Boudreau said the man has taken boxes from multiple porches in the area without ever knowing the contents of the packages.

On another occasion, the homeowner confronted the man and snapped photos of him.

The suspect was wearing a beige hat and a red backpack. The man denied any wrongdoing and left.

According to Boudreau, stealing somebody’s mail is a far more serious offense than simple theft.

“The theft of mail, even a package in this case, it can be as high as 10 years imprisonment,” she told Global News.

With more and more people ordering items online and having them delivered to their homes, Boudreau recommended either having packages delivered to your workplace, or requiring a signature on delivery if you can’t be home.
