Emergency crews were called at 7:34 p.m. to a report a small plane had crashed in a field near Black Diamond. The aircraft crashed about 40 kilometres southwest of Calgary.

A neighbour smelled smoke, which alerted them to the fire and crash.

RCMP said the 30-year-old male pilot was helped out of the wreckage by a passerby before being taken to Foothills Hospital in Calgary with non-life-threatening injuries.

After crews extinguished the fire, the body of the passenger was found and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two men were the only people in the plane at the time.

The Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the crash.

The burnt wreckage was still taped off on Monday.

Neighbours said a similar plane is known to fly in and out of this property but the TSB hasn’t confirmed who the owner of the plane is.
