Alex Ormand was just supposed to buy paint for his house on Friday morning when he found it in the middle of the road, just a few hundred metres from his home — a snapping turtle crossing the street.
According to David Rodrigue, who runs the Ecomuseum in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, there actually is a right and a wrong way to help a turtle cross a street. “Look at where the head is pointing,” he said.
Turtles usually get on the street for a reason, he said. “They know where they’re going.”
Putting them back on the end of the road where they started will just lead them to cross the road again, he said.
It is better putting them off the road in the direction they were headed. He also added that turtles not on the road should just be left alone.
