A man charged with murder in the Okanagan has had his case put over for eight days.
In Kelowna provincial court on Wednesday afternoon, Tejwant Danjou was remanded in custody until Thursday, August 2, at 9 a.m. He is charged with second-degree murder.
The charge stems from an alleged weekend homicide at the Best Western Plus hotel in West Kelowna. On Sunday, at 7:18 p.m., police say they were notified of a woman in need of assistance.
“Upon attendance, police located a deceased woman,” RCMP staff sergeant Annie Linteau said in a press release, adding that a man was arrested a short distance from the hotel.
“It is believed that the man and woman were known to each other and are from the Lower Mainland. Police are continuing their investigation and some area businesses have been impacted as police continue to search for evidence.”
On Wednesday, counsel for Danjou asked for an adjournment for a week, saying they’d like to have a bail hearing as soon as possible. Nigel Crowe, who was acting as an agent for Danjou, said his Vancouver-based firm had yet to receive any disclosure from crown counsel.
Meanwhile, crown counsel asked for a two-week adjournment. Court somewhat split the difference with an eight-day adjournment.
Danjou, with salt and pepper hair and wearing a plaid shirt, sat impassively in the prisoner’s box, though towards the end of the 10-minute hearing, he quickly waved to two people in attendance.
