Parks Canada anticipates repairs and upgrades to the near 80-year-old dam in Coboconk, Ont. to begin next month.

The rehabilitation of the dam in the City of Kawartha Lakes is part of the federal government’s more than $600 million in infrastructure upgrades along the Trent-Severn Waterway and its reservoir lakes.

“Overall, this rehabilitation project will ensure that the dam is reliable, functional, meets current safety codes and standards, and that its water management capabilities are optimized,” Parks Canada stated.

Residents and motorists can expect “intermittent” machinery noise and increase truck traffic. However, the project will not impact water levels or management capabilities.

According to Parks Canada, Balsam Lake is the highest point on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the highest freshwater point from which one can circumnavigate in North America.

Parks Canada will provide updates on the project, one of several this summer in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
