As something that may not surprise a number of homeowners, Durham Region has some of the highest property taxes in the GTA.
According to real estate listing site Zoocasa, those living in Oshawa pay the second-highest property taxes around Toronto.
That tax rate works out to just over 1.4 per cent — over $72,000, based on a $515,000 home.
Brock, Clarington, and Whitby are also in the top five in highest property taxes.
“People are saying, ‘Okay, I want to move to Durham because our prices are low, but at the same hand I don’t want to move to Oshawa because the taxes are too high,’ so then we have a community that is sitting stagnated because nobody wants to. So this is where I worry about what’s going to happen with our children,” said Tara Baylis of Our Neighbourhood Realty Inc.
Orangeville has the highest property tax rate while Toronto has the lowest.
