Osheaga festival bans plastic straws and encourages reusable water bottles

There won’t be any single-use plastic straws at Osheaga, evenko announced Monday.

The promoter said it’s part of a plan to be more eco-conscious.

“Protecting the environment was a priority for us when we were planning Osheaga,” said Jacques Aubé, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of evenko.

“We are proud to achieve and even surpass our eco-friendly management goals and we will continue our efforts in this direction. ”

There will also be a truck to provide free drinking water to festival goers in an effort to reduce single-use plastic bottles.

In addition to this, the festival says it is:

  • Requiring food kiosks to use recyclable containers, cups and utensils, while prohibiting Styrofoam
  • Installing a waste management sorting centre to encourage recycling and composting
  • Collaborating with the STM to promote public transit; evenko points out 82 per cent of festival goers go to the park via Metro
  • Encouraging eco-friendly modes of transport by providing bike racks.

Evenko announced it also won’t be allowing plastic straws at ’77 Montréal, Heavy Montreal, île Soniq and the YUL Eat Festival.

“Being eco-responsible means taking concrete action, year after year, to minimize the ecological footprint of our events,” evenko wrote in a statement.

“It’s not a choice, it’s a commitment.”

The 13th edition of the Osheaga music and arts festival takes place Aug. 3-5 at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
