“We’re just out here to have fun and just get them to interact with police officers so that they can see that we’re just people and they can talk to us,” said Sam McCullum from Peterborough police.

It wasn’t a bad day for some friendship and fishing with the Peterborough police and Big Brothers Big Sisters Peterborough.

“Well, we invite kids from our waiting list, waiting for a big brother or big sister to come out and have some fun for the day. The police officers volunteer their time to fish with kids and just have some fun,” said Tammy Thompson, a case worker of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In its sixth year, this event also helps teach kids a skill they might not have learned otherwise.

“Any day fishing is better than a bad day at work,” said Bill Trudeau with the Peterborough police.

Twenty-one kids from ages five to 15 were in attendance for some fun in the sun.

“We split them into two groups. One group gets to learn quite a bit here at the heritage centre with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. There are some activities and games.

“And the other group, while they are doing that is down at the pond. It’s stocked with small fish as well as large bass and they spend the time there fishing,” McCullum said.
